Corpora and exemplars in phonology

چکیده

ionist models typically work with sparse lexicons, with as only exception in generative grammar the work of Jackendoff (1975). Once the linguistic generalizations of the language have been deduced from the input, the input words are no longer needed to support the generalizations. If they are morphologically complex and completely regular in all respects, they can even be removed from the lexicon, as they can always be recreated via the morphophonological generalizations. The lexicon can be as sparse as to contain only

The importance of comparable corpora in cross-cultural studies

This chapter shows the importance of comparing corpora that are really comparable. The chapter conceives of texts as exemplars of situated genres and acknowledges that the rhetorical and discourse configuration of texts vary as a function of the contextual factors in which texts are situated. It argues that corpora may be considered equivalent (or similar to the maximum degree) across cultures ...

Introduction to Exemplar-Based Models of Language Acquisition and Use

Exemplar-based models have become part and parcel of linguistics: they are used in phonetics and phonology (Johnson 1997; Pierrehumbert 2001), in morphology (Skousen 1989; Krott et al. 2002), syntax (Bod 1998; Tomasello 2003; Reali and Christiansen, in press) and semantics (Batali 2002). The appeal of exemplar models is that they can explain phenomena that are problematic for rule-based models....

The Influence of Word Retrieval and Planning on Phonetic Variation: Implications for Exemplar Models.

Over the past several decades, an increasing number of empirical studies have documented the interaction of information across the traditional linguistic modules of phonetics, phonology, and lexicon. For example, the frequency with which a word occurs influences its phonetic properties of its sounds; high frequency words tend to be reduced relative to low frequency words. Lexicalist Exemplar Mo...

Individuation of postlexical phonology for speech synthesis

Postlexical phonology exhibits a great deal of interspeaker variation, even within widely construed dialects such as American English. Contemporary speech synthesizers have concentrated on modeling the acoustic properties of individual speakers, but not necessarily their phonologies. We discuss a method for inferring individual postlexical phonologies from labeled corpora. Using this method, in...

A Chinese Word Segmentation System Based on Structured Support Vector Machine Utilization of Unlabeled Text Corpus

We have participated in the open tracks and closed tracks on four corpora of Chinese word segmentation tasks in CIPSSIGHAN-2010 Bake-offs. In our experiments, we used the Chinese inner phonology information in all tracks. For open tracks, we proposed a double hidden layers’ HMM (DHHMM) in which Chinese inner phonology information was used as one hidden layer and the BIO tags as another hidden l...
